music: The Week That Was

Kings of Leon
I was afforded my 3rd chance to see Kings of Leon last night at Arlene Schnitzer because of Rachel Briggs' generosity. The first time I saw them was after Aha Heartbreak was released. Me and Joey ventured to the Neighborhood Theater and were not disappointed. Last year I caught them during Bumbershoot on the mainstage. They were supporting Because Of The Times on this performance. Last night I saw them touring off of the newest release, Only By The Night. I'll spare tons of details but say these guys are probably one of my favorite live acts to see. They seem to go 100% everytime and my familiarity with all the material doesn't hurt. Good stuff.

Pattern Is Movement
Sep. 29th, 2008 | 12:08 pm
Saturday I had the pleasure of taking in Pattern is Movement at Town Lounge. Michael had a little blurb about them on his ever enlightening website and Leslie mentioned an appreciation for them when she was up last weekend. She came back around for the show and I joined her. After a long wait the opening band Ah Holly Family played a pretty set and then PiM took the stage. After having everyone wish them good luck they went into their set no holds barred. The drummer Chris Ward is a mad man and the flying drumsticks throughout the set was only the beginning of the insanity. The singer and keys player Andrew Thiboldeaux's stage presence is incredible and the songs all hold their own as little orchestral arrangements with a drumming backbeat that incites dancing. The songs and lyrics themselves leave room for further investigation. I look forward to getting my hands on the CD to do some of that said investigating.

Hot Victory

music: Waltz - Fiona Apple
Two nights ago I made the trek to Kelly's Olympian downtown. A place that I'd been once before and wasn't terribly impressed with. The clientele is a little sketch. The type of place that drunk 'dudes' introduce themselves to you for no reason and you walk away knowing he won't remember you 10 seconds later and you on the other hand will be left mentioning said interaction with a visible question mark over your head in your next blog entry. Downtown is just not the place for me but that is not the reason we are here is it?
Hot Victory
I went to Kelly's to catch Hot Victory. A band that I'd seen by accident once before at Slabtown and was really into. I thought about the syncopated drums and noise they created for days following that show. There is something about the two drummers lack of compromise for anything but one another that just gets me going. The punches of 'accessibility' you hear popped into the structures is reassuring but its the disconnection that makes the music so wonderful. They played about 30 minutes or so before their surprise made an entrance. The L.R.S.D.(Last Regiment of Syncopated Drummers) storms into the venue and joins the band for about 7 minutes of everything drum. It was intensely loud being in the front row but I didn't want to miss a thing. Ben and Caitlin of the band are both parts of the L.R.S.D. so it was only right that they come out and support the band for the 7" release. If you see that they are playing somewhere around your area do yourself a favor and check them out. So good.

The Love Show
The 3rd Annual Love Show at Launchpad is taking place this Friday February the 1st. You would be doing everyone involved a disservice if you didn't attend or make an asserted effort to do so. It's gonna be a blast. It's funny how full circle (but not really) my time here is coming. The Love Show last year is the first art exhibit I attended when I arrived here and it's where I met Martha Wallulis who had a significant hand in getting 2 of the 3 shows I had last year. Also, it's where I met fellow Lover Shower Daniel Papke. I think it's cool, you may not but whatever. See you this Friday.
The chances of me going to see Yeasayer tonight at The Holocene are pretty high. I've been listening to that CD quite a bit since I got it in December (thanks Sarah). There music is a nice twist of experimental sounds and instrumentation with poppy song structures like a mix of TVOTR and Animal Collective. I look forward to seeing how these songs flesh out live. They are playing with MGMT and Newspapers so it should be a good show all around.
